Hello my friends,
Its hard to believe that this coming Sunday is the Fifth in Lent already. Remember a couple of weeks ago when it was trying to snow despite the rain? Now you can hear the steady sounds of the returning birds and the cherry blossoms are in bloom. The sun is out, and it feels like we’re in a different place.
At the church, the landscapers have returned, and the grounds around the church are looking sharper and it won’t be long before the lavender begins to bloom. It’s been amusing watching a pair of crows extracting long twigs from the Lavender plants outside my office window. Its surprising how much they can carry in their beaks! While watching the crows take the dead twigs from the lavender plants it occurred to me that the crows were grooming the lavender plants. By digging into the bushes and clearing out the twigs the crows were clearing out space for light and air giving the lavender a better chance of growing. The crows were solving a problem for themselves by taking the twigs and in turn the lavender plants were benefitting from having the old growth removed. There is a fancy word describing this collaboration: Symbiotic. Symbiosis involves interaction between different organisms living in close association. The way our organs work within our bodies is a good example symbiosis. No organ really lives isolated from the others. They all depend on each other for the body to work. In the same way our relationship with God is symbiotic, its not a one-way street. If it were, how boring for God and how frustrating for us!
I am reminded of all this as we begin our gradual move towards opening the church. The church is becoming more active with each passing day, and more people are stopping by. Last Sunday the Council met and decided to begin Communion and Coffee hour again. It was decided that we would begin on Sunday, April 10 – Passion Sunday – the beginning of Holy week. We are following the Provincial guidelines for opening and we encourage everyone to move at their own pace and comfort level.
